Swiss Dominate BC Floorball Challenge - Canucks Outsider #55

On a summer Saturday, Dave heads to the BC Floorball's Challenge Tournament to learn whassup with fast-paced indoor hockey sport and watch the Swiss Selects soundly defeat the Canadian Waveriders in an exhibition besides the 5-nation cup tournament. While there, Dave talks to Switzerland's Simon and Simon (not to be confused with the TV show), rookie player Boris Mann, Stewart "The Fossil" from England (and another player from London) plus interviews with BC Floorball's Greg Beaudin (AKA Billy Tucker) and the "godfather" of Canadian Floorball, Finland's Juha Mikola. Topics include rules and regulations, Swiss military training, beautifulness of Vancouver, pro players in Europe, equipment, sportsmanship and beer.

Eastern WA University Hockey Dominating ACHA standings

This just in from my amigo Cosmo of the Clubside Breakfast Time podcast who is an alumni of Eastern Washington University, in Cheny, WA (no relation to Dick).

Eastern Washington University's own Men's Hockey Club is ranked first in the American Collegiate Hockey Association Division 2 West regular season rankings. The team receives an automatic slot in the national tournament, held this month.
Completing the regular season on the road with a win in Montana, the team finished with only one loss on its record. The hockey team will enjoy state-of-the-art facilities at Eastern´s new University Recreation Center, slated for completion in spring 2008. The center will feature a multipurpose sports surface that can be transitioned into an ice rink.

Crazy Canucks - Equal Opportunity podcast

My Crazy Canucks colleagues fired up another show yesterday (I was guest lecturing at Vancouver Film School which i mention just to make me sound smart and cool) - so, they filled my slot with an Oilers fan (shame) Loxy from Hot Oil. Yup, meaing JJ and John were outnumbered by the talented ladies of hockey blogging so we'll see if they could keep themselves under control (unlikely).

I loaded TCC#20 - Alberta crap sandwich ( February 07th, 2007 29:02) up on my useless piece of crap but free from Telusthatwesuck iPod shuffle for my homeward bound commute listening pleasure and issue a strong advisory to do the same.

Kudos to the Canucks for outreaching to the fans for content. As long as the rights as non-exclusive, this is a great opportunity for crafty fans to show their skills. I think the NHL missed a huge opporunity post-lockout to really involve the fans into the decision making process. I think the ill-fated Vote for Rory campaign was a sign that the fans want to be at least adknowledged by the suits since their opinions seem to be ignored while intelligence insulted with mediocre marketing.

I dig the Canucks signs on buses and banners around town but not as much as user generated content. Serve it up 'Nuckers!

Floor Hockey funtimes in Vancouver

Just a quick note that i checked out Floorball Hockey last week and plan on going back for another go here soon. It is user friendly hockey with short sticks and not much equipment required (shorts and tshirt). Co-ed, all-ages, international and cheap. Sounds like a beauty.

Monday Night Floorball!!! - Starts Monday
Our popular Monday Night Floorball Sessions at the Roundhouse kick-off this coming Monday night. All equipment will be provided so you can check out different sticks, goalie gear and take part in a competitive game. It's a great opportunity to try the sport if you've never seen it and get a really good workout. We look forward to welcoming our regular players back who will be only too willing to show you the ropes and get you started!
All that's required is the $5 drop-in fee to the Roundhouse on arrival and normal gym kit. Greg Beaudin will be back, showing off his new moves learnt on his recent trip to Toronto and doubtless reliving the goal he scored in a league game there!

So it's New Year, it's Monday night, it's time for Floorball. See you at 6pm!

Analysis from an Oilers fan ... (belatedly posted but enjoyable nevertheless since the Nucks had just waxed the Oil)

Dear Canucks Outsider,

I wasn't able to call from the game, but I thought typing a brief recap of the tonight's live game.

In my educated, first-hand opinion, I submit that the only two things that impeded Edmonton tonight were offense and defense. If they would have added those two components to their game, they would have closed the door on your precious Canucks.

I thought that the Oilers showed off the spirit of giving that largely resides among the residents of Alberta by freely giving the puck away to the Canucks time and time again. The goalie was kind enough to allow the Canucks offense to enjoy free reign on the back of his net, to boot. In fact, he stepped aside multiple times to watch the shots sail in. Fortunately, he was able to get his defensive cohorts on-side with the theme of "give them every chance possible"; and they refrained from hitting, brushing, or simply acting unseasonly towards the Canucks. Any fights you saw were figments of your imagination, just like the two roughing calls against the Oilers in the third, which I am convinced the refs conjured in their minds because, you know, Canucks needed those extra power plays.

In the beginning moments of the second period, following the Canucks' second goal, I began rehearsing my brush-off story (how I'd explain this one without looking like a dufus for liking the Oilers); but by the end, I felt like I couldn't avoid looking like a dufus for liking the Oilers after this game. Oh well . . .

My team lost. They have now lost three in a row, while your team won their third in a row. Based on the number of goals in the last week, one may even conclude that the Canucks have learned how to score. Who'd have thunk that would happen this season!?! Next thing you know, they'll score as many as the offensive powerhouse Phoenix (8-0 over San Jose)!

As I write this I'm sort of stalling before I come to a conclusion in hopes that I can come up with my aforementioned brush-off story. However, on this very night, based on that three-stooges performance, I am a dufus for liking the Oilers instead of the Canucks. You know, the Oilers, right? Yeah, the ones that made the playoffs last year and went to Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final while the Canucks were sitting around, trimming their pretty goatees, talking about how they could only beat the Oilers once last year.

Jerry heading to Nelson for Hockey Day in Canada

My amigo Jerry is heading to Nelson for Hockey Day in Canada. Hopefully, he'll get to party with Ron and Don and Stanley and can provide some insightful commentary (from what he remembers after anyhow) - Here's what he says:

This saturday
I will be going to Nelson (about 30-45 minutes away) to take part in some of the hockey day in canada festivities. It is a CBC deal where every year they pick a town to broadcast from between games. (It is a triple header day - all 3 games are Canadian teams versus Canadian teams) There will be some puck-shooting accuracy contests, a peewee junior game, a major junior game between the Nelson Leafs and the Sicamouse team (can't remember their name) , and the part I am most excited about : you get to take your picture with The Stanley Cup! whoo & hoo! All festivities are free as well! Ron Maclean & Don Cherry will be there so I will likely see them somewhere along the way too! I am soooo excited about this. I will definitely be posting pictures of the day at some point sunday morning. This is gonna be sooo cool.

Crazy Canucks talk about the Streakers

Gather 'round while the whole batch of Crazy Nuckers rollick through 42 minutes of banter, served up tasty as TCC#14 - Five game streak high.

During the winter of crazy storms, we - including Radio John, Miss Rebecca, J.J. Canuck and Alanah and Beyond (though she drops off, i still am on pace for the most disconnect +/- for the season. What's that trophy called?) - enjoy the streak and check in on Rory, Burrows, Green, Linden, Luongo, and Naslund while i (DaveOutsider) also offer some lengthy discourse on the South East and North West divisions, building teams for the playoffs, Sedins scoring off the rush, World Junior tournament ... among other things i've forgotten. oh yeah, we do some Canucks on the All-star team predictions.
